• 10Gb Ethernet is now "afforadable"

From Digital Man@VERT to All on Sat Feb 1 14:21:03 2025
I finally upgraded the LAN between my servers from 1Gb Ethernet to 10Gb Ethernet.

I'd hestitated before because of the 10GBase-T switches available were expensive (I wasn't interested in going down the SFP+ route, I wanted to use CAT6(a) cabling) - anyway, MikroTik has a nice 4(+1) port 10GBaseT switch for under $200:
    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DPR8KLV6

I got a couple Intel (X540-T1) NICs for $70 each, and cheap CAT6A cables, and voila: 10Gbits!

My Internet speed is still just 640/40Mb, but I have to move large files (usually video) between systems often enough that this is a huge time saver. And I'm hoping the lower latency will help with my Samba/SMB share issues (lost lock/unlock requests) that happen about once a day.

    Ahh, must be nice :)

I'm a fan of MikroTik gear and use it hear myself. I'm still a common man with 1GB, but I'm sure I'll upgrade oneday...

Yeah, I had a big network file copy/move recently that really brought down my normal BBS/server operations and that motivated me to count the cost again (I was expecting to at least move up to 2.5 or 5Gb) - I was pleasantly surprised to see the 10GBase-T switch prices have come down to Earth and the MikroTik does appear to be a quality piece of gear even though it's consumer grade.

I've bought so much tech gear over the past 40 years that ends up worthless and in a landfill (or my closet, I'm slow to throw out stuff I think I might use again one day), I try to buy new tech only when prices have come down considerably.

Yeah, I think I'm in the same boat. Except sometimes I cant help myself.

I've often listed old stuff on ebay (when ebay was good), for $1 along with a message that was along the lines of "this works, and didnt want to throw it in the bin, hoping it will get a new home".

When ebay was good, I'd sometimes get a couple $100 dollars for stuff that was just sitting in a box. Not sure many use ebay these (I know I dont as much - and my attempts to empty the box havent even got the $1 now).

My new toy I'm waiting on is a few CM5 boards to go into my DeskPi Super6C that I've managed to score (hence my keeness to get SBBS running on 64 bit arm).

I also have an Radxa X4 coming (Pi sized but N100 processor), which might be SBBS home if arm64 doesnt work out...

    I'm sure if you hang-out in #synchronet (irc.synchro.net) you'll find solutions to your SBBS on arm64 worries/issues.

The closet still full? Is it worth still keeping the old

I hadn't really looked into 10 gigabit equipment much yet.. I do have a couple PCs that I copy files between sometimes, but I feel like 1 gigabit is still enough for me. Maybe one reason is that although I have SSDs in both computers, I also have a spinning hard drive in each computer (for storage) as well, as spinning drives still seem to be less expensive for storage - and I thought a gigabit network connection would be about as fast as I could copy files between PCs with a couple of spinning hard drives.

That 10 gigabit switch is more expensive than my router cost.. At the price point, I might wait a bit before upgrading to 10 gigabit. Also, I'd have to buy 10 gigabit ethernet cards for both PCs, since their onboard ethernet is 1 gigabit.

I have one of those here. It works like a charm. Mikrotik make a very good and inexpensive switch, among other things.
