Quick question, wouldn't it be better to connect over ssh? At least
    if its available

I've had the same thought, but it seems many BBS users and sysops don't really care about the security that SSH offers over Telnet. On my BBS, I get far more users using telnet than SSH.

ooh, ok! i personally prefer ssh because i can just put the
credentials into syncterm once and not have to worry about the
extra login screen, i only use telnet for conchaos bc i don't
THINK they have a ssh service.

YOU CAN PUT YOUR TELNET CREDENTIALS INTO A BBS'S DIALING ENTRY IN
SYNCTERM, AND THEN AT THE LOGIN PROMPT YOU JUST PRESS 'ALT-L' AND IT
LOGS YOU IN WITH NO FURTHER FUSS.

... Did you ever stop to think, and forget to start again?

only use telnet for conchaos bc i don't THINK they have a ssh service. i
tried emailing the sysop but they haven't responded

nvm i noticed they had a website and the ssh service is on a different port ^^"

Yes, all that stuff is normally on separate ports.. The standard port for telnet is 23, standard SSH port is 22, and standard web port is 80 - though the settings for those can be changed by the sysop.
